Yesterday evening 48 year old Alberto Ramos showed us what he built with his own hands, a small shack made out of pieces of planks and boards. It was situated just beside Scotia Bank on the Phillip Goldson highway and right next to the ongoing works at the Belama round about. Ramos told us that he had been conducting business there for about two years and then Wednesday he got the unexpected.

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

“The letter was served to me stating that I have three days to leave then today this morning now one day after 2pm they are going to come and tear it down. I say why the words “tear it down “? Why can’t we use better words. They said “well our job is our job and that is to tear it down.”

“And tore it down they did. Hope Shop was no more.”

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

“I want to talk to someone on a humanitarian level I don’t want to talk about policies that contribute to the development of people, this is not contributing to my development and I need to talk to somebody who knows what I’m talking about.”

“And somebody did show up a woman believed to be the city planner along with traffic officers. Ramos spoke to them briefly but the results were the same. He was told that his shed was in the way and he needed to relocate it. To keep the peace police officers were called and tow showed up from precinct four.”

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

“The city planner told me that they deal with policy, I told them that  I want to deal with someone who is humanitarian like someone who has a conscience, someone who will say “brother if you don’t have anywhere to go we will either help you out of find somewhere for you to go.” but she’s telling me that she deals with just policies and that if she is planning the city and if she thinks this has to go then this has to go. If I’m not obstructing traffic on this corner and don’t see that I should have any problem.

And the police are here?

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

“Well the police are here, I don’t know. They say they will break it down now. I don’t have anywhere to go or anywhere to take my things.”

Did you ask her if the city would assist you in taking your stuff?

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

“That is why I told them , I told them to bring somebody that would come and assist me. I’m not telling them to bring police I’m telling them to bring someone who will help me, I need help.

Ramos uneasy, angered and saddened stuck around to see his Hope Shop become nothing more than a pile of planks and board. The shop was named Hope Shop do you have any more hope?

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

“Hope oh lord. I will say that I will put it in Jesus’ hands you know why because I feel weak, I think I need help and strength.”

You are saying that now instead of Mr. Hope you’ll be Mr. Evil.

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

“That was a moment in which I felt very frustrated and I wanted to take a charge and I wanted to do something so that a message could be sent out there for productive people who take their productive, physical and human and get it into production.

In his state of mind Ramos thought of getting revenge on those who were sent to destroy his dreams. What was your intention with the pint bottle?

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

“I wanted to take a charge and really get locked up for something rather than just have them come and do anything with me.

What did you want to do?

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

I wanted to hit her vehicle.

Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News

You wanted to damage the City planner’s vehicle?

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

“I wanted to break open one of the glasses but the police told me that they always see me and that I am a productive guy and that it doesn’t make sense. A peaceful fight is sometimes okay. I told him that I don’t feel peaceful, I feel hurt right now because those are many hours that I put in and that is tough, they don’t know that.”

What is plan B for you?

Alberto Ramos – Shop owner

“I’m going to get the hell out of Belize that is what I’m going to do.”
