Another naval ship has run aground in Belizean waters. This time it was a Mexican naval ship and according to a release, it happened in the wee hours of this morning. A 55 ft. Mexican Navy Vessel, a “Polaris – Intercepter” experienced a “soft grounding”, on the mud flats and shoals just south of Blackadore Caye. Prime Minister Dean Barrow, told us what he knows about it.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“All I know is that it ran aground on some sort of sand bank but they were doing some sort of exercise had the full approval of our naval authorities. I gather they do regular patrols which help us so again accidents will happen but I’m not so sure about the details.”

According to a release sent from the Government, Mexican Navy vessels customarily transit from their Chetumal Bay base on a routinely scheduled basis through that area with the knowledge and permission of the Government of Belize to access their southernmost outpost at Xcalac. We were told that the Belize Coast Guard responded immediately from the Forward Operating Base at San Pedro Ambergris Caye. Late this evening we were informed that the ship was removed at four thirty this evening and there seems to be no environmental damage.
