A mother died while protecting her two children last night. Thirty eight year old Myra Carbajal was with her two children at the Spring of Living Water Pentecostal Church of God on the George Price Highway in Santa Elena. We understand that they were in the church’s compound when they saw a blue Toyota truck speeding towards their direction. Realizing that the truck would not stop, Carbajal instinctively pushed her two children out of harm’s way. However, she was unable to save herself and the car ran over her. Deputy Commander, Inspector Reyes, shared more details.

Inspector Reymundo Reyes, Deputy Commander, San Ignacio Police

“Last night sometime around eight twenty pm, information was received of an accident at the Spring of Living Water Pentecostal Church situated on the George Price Highway. On arrival police saw a blue in color pickup on the walkway which had collided on the entrance of the church. Also seen was some people with injuries and a female who was trapped somewhat under a front portion of the vehicle. With the assistance of civilians, the vehicle was removed from its position where the young lady had to be extracted and then transported to the San Ignacio Town hospital where she succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment.

“We understand that it was related to an issue with the vehicle being in gear. Can you say what the driver of the vehicle has told police?”

Inspector Reymundo Reyes, Deputy Commander, San Ignacio Police

“At this moment the investigation is being carried out. The driver of the vehicle is alleging that she did not even start up the engine of the vehicle. The vehicle moved off by itself, rolling into the gate and then towards the entrance of the church. We have witnesses who are saying, I heard the engine of the vehicle being started , then I heard an impact, when I looked back I saw that it was the vehicle had run towards the gate leading up to the entrance of the church so we are looking into that aspect of the investigation.

“Did the vehicle die on the scene or at the hospital?”

Inspector Reymundo Reyes, Deputy Commander, San Ignacio Police

“As I mentioned the victim was transported to the San Ignacio Town Hospital and she died whilst receiving treatment at the hospital. The young lady who succumbed to her injuries is one Myra Carbajal, thirty eight years old of Santa Elena. Her children sustained minor injuries. Apparently when she saw the vehicle coming towards their direction she managed or tried to push them away but it was injuries caused by the gate that the children sustained. Ms. Myra was unfortunately trapped between the building and the vehicle and that is what caused the injuries to the upper part of her left hip.”

Inspector Reyes says that based on the result of the post mortem examination, police will decide what sort of charges to levy against the driver. That post mortem is scheduled for tomorrow at the KHMH.
