The media was called out early this morning to one of the markets near the Belize City bus terminal. Some market customers pointed to the private market situated at the pound yard. Vendors there complained of not only deplorable conditions but also of an unsanitary and unhealthy environment. Some customers voiced their concerns.

Customers

“I think the market is in deplorable condition. The vendors pay their monies every week and government has to send the Health Department in there, there is a lot of dirt and stench in the place. This is not humane.”

“It’s just that the proper authorities are not doing their jobs because time and again when I go and come from San Pedro I stop to buy some fruits and things but looking at this whole mess here it doesn’t give me that enticing feeling to buy food and vegetables because to me it’s not healthy so I guess that proper authorities should look into it and do something because I have a friend here also that says he pays his dues so that the place can look good but nobody can tell where the money is going.”

Reporter

“We know there are restaurants in here where people are selling food I know that it’s not a sanitary condition with the way the place looks.”

Customers

“It’s not a healthy place because then first of all I am a person that thinks of hygiene and myself and my health comes first so when I see something like that it doesn’t make me want to stop and buy anything in any of those restaurants because the stench that you smell, how the place looks it doesn’t make you feel like you want to buy what you desire to eat so like I said again the proper authorities need to put a check on it and do something about it.

“Right now the market is clean so right now we are trying to find somewhere we can get rid of the garbage because the other market we really don’t want them to take it over there because that is Finnegan’s market and this is a private market but the market clean.”

Reporter

“We came yesterday and there was a lot of garbage.”

Customer

“Well there is no garbage here today so they cleaned it up.”

Reporter

“Who is responsible for the cleaning of the place?

Customer

“Really there is nobody in charge of it everybody just gets rid of their own garbage but the place is clean right now and it looks good.”

Reporter

“Do you think that that is a right situation to have everyone responsible for their own thing or would you want to see the City Council step in.”

Customers

“With the City Council it would be better because there would be a day or two when they take the garbage for the people it would be better. Remember then you have to have some garbage collector to clean up the place.”

“When I entered the place I got a smell there are food vendors and even for our personal health as customers I think it is very unsafe. Look at the place I don’t know if the place concerns the City Council or who it concerns but I think better could be done.”

Reporter

“Do you think this affects business when people come in and see the place like this?”

Customer

“If I’m going to come and spend my money with you I want to come to a nice clean face environment and look at this place. Coming from that direction and the wind is blowing in the same direction you get some smells. Who does it concern? The City Council or does it concern a private owner and that is what we need to do, get down to the bottom line because I guarantee that these people are paying for a spot to do their business and then if they are paying and the environment is not safe for them much less the customers.
