Twenty seven year old Kareem Jabbor Clarke was shot and killed early this morning at around 2 o’clock. He was riding his bicycle on Vernon Street and when crossing the bridge, a gunman sprung out from the dark and blasted a barrage of bullets at him. He was rushed the hospital but unfortunately was pronounced dead on arrival. He was a reporter for the Amandala Newspaper and a colleague of ours.

Hipolito Novelo reporting…

“He was more than just a reporter, he was a vital component to his family.”

Sister of Kareem Clarke

“He was my mom’s rock, he was everything to us especially Mia he loved, he didn’t have any children but he loved his niece and his nephew.”

Mother of Kareem Clarke

“I would tell him that I would have a light bill to pay and he would say he would work and bring the money for me. They took away my bread winner.”

“He was a provider for his family, a great uncle and an awesome son. But early this morning, while he was riding his bicycle on Vernon Street, in the Ghost Town Gang Area, a gunman pounced on 27 year old Kareem Clarke and shot him to death. Kareem, a reporter for the Amandala Newspaper received five shots, three to the body and two to the head.”

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“This morning about 1AM police visited the corner of Lake View Street and Vernon Street where they saw the lifeless body of Kareem Clark, 27 years journalist with gunshot injuries to the abdomen and chest area. Thereafter he was taken to the KHMH where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Kareem had left from his mother’s home on Freetown just after 8 o’clock last night.

Mother of Kareem Clarke

“When he left from here after he was done eating his food he left down the stairs and that was the last I saw him. He told me he had brought some clothes for me to wash for him and I told him that was okay. That was it, he went down the step I even watched him ride going in his black and white shirt.

“He didn’t share where he was headed but police shared what they have found out so far know about his murder. And while they have no motive, Kareem’s grieving mother and sister believe that it was not a robbery.”

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“No we don’t have a motive, we know he came from that general area, he went to visit someone there and then he was targeted when he was riding near the bridge.”

Reporter

“Was his phone with him still?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“Yes everything was with him.”

Reporter

“So it wasn’t a robbery?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“No because everything was on him. I know he usually took his key, two phones in his pocket and that was it with him. He still had his earring in, a watch was on him too. Somebody just passed.”

Sister of Kareem Carke

“Out of stupidity because they don’t hang them, if they start to hang them one a day, one morning noon and night they start to hang them they would stop kill.”

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“Well we are following up on several leads but we do not have anybody detained at this time.”

Reporter

“Were there any witnesses or have you spoken to anyone?

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“Well the police are out there doing their investigation and interviewing persons and canvasing the area to see what they can get regarding this murder.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love FM News

“At the scene police recovered 9mm expended shells. Karim is the second person to be killed in the area. Three weeks ago 15 year old Tyrique Thompson was also shot and killed. Just a few yards from where both murders happened there is a police checkpoint but Superintendent Romero is not sure whether it is active. However reports are that the ghost town gang is experiencing internal rivalry.

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“The investigation is in its preliminary phase and that’s the only information we have at this time that he went there to visit someone and while he was going home he was targeted that is all we have.”

Reporter

“This is the third murder to happen in that area where police is just a stone’s throw away, what’s happening, are you guys unable to deal with the criminal activity in that area?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“The patrols are in that area, there is a checkpoint in that area and this shooting happened and the checkpoint is situated closer to the entrance of the Mayflower area, this happened at the corner of Lakeview and Vernon Street.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love News

“Were police there and actually at the checkpoint?

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“I know that there is a checkpoint there and that is manned by police yes.”

Reporter

“Was it active at the time?

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“I will need to check on that. We have our patrols out there, we have our officers on motorcycles they are checking the different neighborhoods conducting searches, we are out there but these murders still happen. The police have brought in persons, they have been spoken to we know what is going on there and like I said we cannot be at every corner at every street but in fact the police is there trying to address the situation.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love News

“Would it be accurate to say that the influx of new police recruits has not helped the crime situation in the city?”

Supt. Hilberto Romero – Head, CIB

“Like I mentioned we have our patrols out there they can be seen out there but these persons just find areas that are isolated or they find opportunities to commit these crimes.”

Sister of Kareem Clarke

“My mom believes in a just God so my mom is not up to vengeance. It hurts.”
