Belize City police are investigating a bank robbery. Robbers barged into CIBC First Caribbean International Bank at the San Cas Plaza this morning at around 9 o’clock. A group of young men, some of whom, were armed with handguns held up the teller and ordered the security officers to the ground along with the bank’s customers. Hipolito Novelo reports.

LLOYD NEAL (Eyewitness)

“I didn’t see when anybody entered looking suspicious, we were chatting, watching the TV about the plane that they found the wing. While I am chatting having fun, I hear, “Get on the ground and nobody will get hurt!” It made me begin to wonder are they filming a movie.

HIPOLITO NOVELO REPORTING

“But it was not a movie and reality kicked in instantly for Lloyd Neal who got on the ground along with everyone else in the bank as the three armed culprits proceeded to rob CIBC First Caribbean International Bank.”

LLOYD NEAL

“I got down because this old man don’t want to die too quick although he’s already old. Then I saw the fellow with the gun and then people jumped over the counter young fellows and we weren’t too scared because no gun was fired and no big threat was made but it was done in a very quick time. Nobody do anything funny and nobody will get hurt. I didn’t see that people will scared and frightened. They made sure they put the securities on the floor and searched them good for a gun, they didn’t bother with anybody else. What an experience at my age.”

“And in a matter of minutes, the robbers, with bags of cash in hand, escaped in what is believed to be a green van that waiting for them outside.”

LLOYD NEAL

“Nobody, none of the culprits tried to hide their face in any way. It made me wonder if they are sure of something. Nobody put on a little funny thing to hid their identity, very funny and very suspicious.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO

” And it is because of that mistake and the fact that security cameras inside the bank captured the entire robbery, police were able to detained three persons. One was detained near Queen Street.”

SUPT. LINDEN FLOWERS

“Yes, cameras were operational and it has been helpful so far with the police officers in identifying some persons that have already been taken into custody.  So far we have three persons taken into custody as a part of this investigation.  The persons that we have in custody are the persons that are the suspects on the camera that have been revealed so far.  They are citizens in the area are all known to police, all the names that have come up in the investigation so far.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO

“Can you share where they were captured?”

SUPT. LINDEN FLOWERS

“Across the city. One of the male persons was captured on the further end of the south side off the Queen Street area.  So far no firearm has been found.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO REPORTING

“Officer Commanding Precinct 4, Superintendent Linden Flowers, told the media that the amount of money stolen has not been ascertained and has not been recovered. Police are still looking for the get a away green van and the driver.  Just a stone’s throw away from the bank, there is a police booth and at the time of the robbery one officer was present however that officer, did not know of the robbery until after the culprits escaped.”

SUPT. LINDEN FLOWERS

“An officer was at the booth that is located at the roundabout at the San Cas compound and that officer was stationed there and his report so far is that the quickness in which it occurred he was not alerted until after the robbery had taken place. I have told the officer that he need be alert so I want to see more alertness in the area but it could have happened.”
