HEAD OF ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH SHOWS SUPPORT FOR BTV

Before heading off to Sarstoon Island on Sunday, Orlando de la Fuente stopped by the offices of Belize Roman Catholic Bishop, Reverend Dorrick Wright. He did so to receive blessings for a safe journey for him and all those who will be making the trip. Bishop Wright prayed over de la Fuente and several members of the media who will be going on the trip as well. After the blessing Bishop Wright gave the media a statement. He began by expressing his views about Guatemalan’s claim over Belize and particularly over Sartstoon Island.

Rt. Rev. Dorrick Wright

I don’t think that they have a right to take control of it, if it is our country we should be left with it and so I cannot support them in that and it is a shame that this has to happen but from I was small I have been hearing about this Guatemalan claim, I don’t know if it was down to land before but they were claiming but it’s something I think they enjoy hanging over our heads. I don’t care for it, it’s going to hurt us in the end.”

And to end the claim, Government’s says that Belize’s best bet is to ventilate our position in the International Court of Justice. Bishop Wright says “No to the ICJ”.

Rt. Rev. Dorrick Wright

“I have heard so many things about the ICJ. I’m not certain I know which because I’ve heard some say that if we go we will lose and some say if we go we will win some say we shouldn’t go because they have no right to make decisions for us, others say that decision has already been made. So if all that is true I don’t think we should go, if that decision was made at Independence maybe we should not go but I leave it up to the government and hope that in their prudence they will make the right decision but I really would not like them to just run into this. Listen to everybody and see what can be sensible decision that can be made. I imagine most of us Roman Catholics in Belize are Belizeans and I suspect that somewhere along the lines it will be asked of us to make a statement or show our support. I support in a quiet way the move for them to leave us alone. Let us flourish as a country, I  ask God to prosper the work of our hands in this country but please leave us alone.”

Currently, Bishop Wright is ill and when asked if he would have made the trip if he wasn’t this is what he said.

Rt. Rev. Dorrick Wright

I’m not certain it would have depended on a whole lot of things and especially appointments and so on so I’m not certain what I would have done at that time. It’s like asking me if I were a girl if I would have become a nun I don’t know. I’m not so certain what I would have done at that time. “

Reporter

“What is your opinion of those who are going on the trip?”

Rt. Rev. Dorrick Wright

I think it’s good for them to make it known to our neighbors that this is our country and we have a right to be here then I ask also to be careful that let us pray that nobody be hurt, let us pray that nobody does something wrong that will trigger anything that would not be very sensible and responsible.”

While the original plan was for the group to dock directly on Sarstoon Island, Orlando de la Fuente says those plans have changed.

Orlando de la Fuente, Northern Territorial Volunteers

“It’s important that the expedition departs on time so we are going to depart PG for those coming by bus if you are going to be in PG already or by private transport we will depart PG at 8 am the latest. We should be in Barranco by 9 am and we are expecting a 9:30 am departure from Barranco to the Sand Bar. It’s about twenty minutes away.”

Reporter

“In landing spot, everybody is saying Sarstoon island, has that changed?”

Orlando de la Fuente, Northern Territorial Volunteers

“That has changed so the expedition members need to know that they will get wet, they will be on a sand bar it’s going to be ankle deep, it’s not mud. When Will and I scouted the island there was no area where we could find an adequate area do disembark it was all mangrove and swamp. So we had to change it, the sand bar is right in front of the island itself and its going to be better. Logistically it’s going to be safer for the entire group to disembark at the sand bar in front of Sarstoon Island. It’s a little bit north and deeper into Belizean territory too.”

Love News reporters, Hipolito Novelo and Arturo Cantun along with videographer Myles Gillett will be on the expedition.
