Forty-five year old Michael Andrews, a taxi driver of Kraal Road, was charged with rape when he appeared today before Acting Chief Magistrate Patricia Arana. No plea was taken because the offence is indictable. The prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that the offence is of a serious nature, that sexual offences have become prevalent and that if granted bail it is believed that the defendant will interfere with the complainant. In response Andrews said that he is a law abiding citizen who is a cab driver and he does not interfere with anybody. Acting Chief Magistrate Arana upheld the objection and she remanded Andrews into custody until September 30. The complainant, a 41 year old woman reported to the police that on August 15 Andrews went to her residence in Belama Phase 2 and had sex with her against her will.
