On Monday the Corozal Sugar Cane Producers’ Association received confirmation that it had been certified to sell its sugar with the Fairtrade Logo.  This morning the second largest of the three associations, Progressive Sugar Cane Farmers’ Association, got word that they too were certified and will be benefiting from the premium price upon the sale of its sugar.  We spoke with PSCFA general manager, Cosmi Hernandez, who told us more.

Cosmi Hernandez – General Manager, PSCFA

“Earlier this morning we received an email from FLOCERT where we now have the permission to trade under Fairtrade. All we need is to send two more documents for us to receive the documents.”

Is this going to be beneficial to your membership? Do you guys have any plans already as to how this is going to be invested?

Cosmi Hernandez – General Manager, PSCFA

“No, we are working on that, we are having some zone meetings. Tomorrow we have two zone meetings. On Monday we are having two other zone meetings and we are programming our General meeting for the 11th of October this year where everything will be discussed. We are planning on having a revolving fund. Some farmers have concerned with this rental of the building where we are presently situated so we are thinking about purchasing a property for the association to erect a new building for the association.”

Do you have any idea as to how much you will be getting out of this?

Cosmi Hernandez – General Manager, PSCFA

“A little over $300,000. I would want to thank the staff from Progressive all the managers for their hard work and especially all the farmers who cooperated for the achievement of this situation.”

Progressive Sugar Cane Farmers’ Association has a membership of 955 and represents a total of 279,000 tons of cane.  The three cane farmers associations are now certified by Fairtrade.
