Belize’s National A Team left the country today en-route to Canada where they will be playing against the Canadian Team in round three of the World Cup Qualifiers matches. Some of the players spoke to Hipolito Novelo before boarding the plane.

Hipolito Novelo reporting…

“What’s going through your mind now leaving Belize and unto Canada?

Dalton Eiley – Captain

“One thing to bring back the win and make Belize proud and then defend it in our backyard.

“Belize’s National A team, the Jaguars left on a flight to Toronto, Canada, where on September fourth they will go against Canada’s football team as part of the third round of the World Cup Qualifying matches. For the past three months, the Jaguars have been training in both physical workouts and tactical exercises.

Is the Jaguars team prepared to take on Canada?

Woodrow West, Goalkeeper

“Well as far as I know the team has been training for the past three months and so with that I think the team should be well prepared and focused in knowing what we want to do and like I said we have already passed the first stage and it’s a plus for us and an encouragement that we could do it and the players have that in mind so I think that’s going to be a good thing for us going into this game.

“For this game it is important for the jaguars to draw or to score a goal.

Dalton Eiley, Captain

“A goal away counts as two so if you score a goal there it is better. A draw is good but if you score it’s even better, you just come home and play a nil nil draw but a goal away will be much more for us to qualify, it would send a message to the world saying that Belize can play football and we are not afraid of anyone.

Is the team united at this moment?

Dalton Eiley, Captain

“Well we’re very united. We’ve come together and we’ve made some decisions and we’ve had some meetings and I think everyone is happy with the decisions we’ve made and we are going forward to just focus on the game and try to get the results.”

And to bring positive results, they have Deon McCauley, the star striker.  Do you think you’ll score a goal?

Deon McCauley – Striker

“Well I’m always confident that I will score goals so that is no doubt, as long as there is an opportunity there I’ll show up.

Hipolito Novelo, Love  News

“ Do you believe that because now that you are also a part of the team that that is an advantage for the Belize Jaguars?

Deon McCauley – Striker

“Well of course my goal is to score goals that is the most important thing, if you don’t score goals you can’t win games and I am blessed to be back with the team and I am happy that I can score goals for Belize especially in the last two games that we played and I’m ready for this game.

Charlie Slusher, Asst. Head Coach

“This third round is definitely a harder approach so we give them all the respect and I know that Canadians have a lot to prove from a disastrous Gold Cup appearance they did recently so they are trying to use us as a scape goat to get back some fame so we know that we are the underdogs and we are prepared for that and I think our guys like the idea of when people underestimate us because we know what we can do and that is what we’ll be showing in this game against Canada

When you first got to know that you would be playing against Canada what went through your mind?

Dalton Eiley, Captain

“Well revenge, we’ve played them before and they beat us, we watched them play in the gold cup they were pretty good but we are sure that we could go out there and hold our own we are not afraid of Canada we are going to go out there and play our best and hopefully we will get a good result to come home and seal the deal.”

Hipolito Novelo, Love News

“If they do seal the game as Eiley puts it, the Jaguars will then move on for the fourth round but will they be able to afford it?

Charlie Slusher, Asst Head Coach

It’s hard because we had a lot of financial obstacles just to make this trip. It could have been much better for the players because whatever effect financially affects the entire program it definitely trickles down to the players and you don’t want those things to be a problem and I know that the guys will be focused on the game although that exists.”
