And while Dean Barrow was being sworn in as Prime Minister for the third time, Francis Fonseca was announcing he would be stepping down as the leader of the People’s United Party.  Reporter Hipolito Novelo was at the party’s headquarters for the announcement.

“On May 5 2015, Francis Fonseca told Love News this:”

FRANCIS FONSECA

“… and certainly it is not my intention to, if the People’s United Party were to ever lose the General Elections, certainly, it is not my intention to remain as the leader of the party.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO REPORTING

“The People’s United Party did lose. The United Democratic Party was voted in and Dean Barrow became Prime Minister for his third consecutive term. So today, Fonseca kept to his word and announced his resignation.”

FRANCIS FONSECA

Ladies and gentlemen it has been my distinct honor and privilege to lead the People’s United Party over the past four years. I think given the results of yesterday’s elections it is right and appropriate that I stand down as the leader of the People’s United Party. I do not intend to do so immediately, I certainly want to make sure that there is an orderly and smooth transition so I will advise the Chairman of the party to ensure that he put in place a structure to ensure that that smooth transition takes place over the next few weeks. We will of course have to meet as a party, as a National Executive to discuss that transition process in compliance with the Constitution of our party so that the party can prepare itself for the election of a new leader.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO REPORTING

“Fonseca will not only stand down as the leader of the PUP but will not seek re-election.”

FRANCIS FONSECA

But this has been my last election. I am still in my forties but I think I will have to find another way to contribute to the development of Belize. I will of course serve out my term working for the people of Freetown but I do not intend to seek reelection.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO REPORTING

“Fonseca became the Leader of the People’s United Party in 2011 succeeding John Briceno. He led the PUP in the 2012 General Elections which the PUP lost by a narrow margin. The PUP then lost two Bi elections one in Dangriga and the other in Cayo North. For municipal elections the UDP handsomely won over the PUP municipal slates.  Fonseca also face challenged within his own party. Several persons within the PUP felt that Fonseca should not be leader and sought to challenge his leadership. They were known as the g-12 and one of them was Dr. Francis Smith, who lost to Wilfred Elrington.”

DR FRANCIS SMITH

I challenged him to put his leadership on the table in free and fair elections, I believe he did so but we did not have the time to go through with the process. I never once asked him to step down as leader, I challenged him to put his leadership on the table, I didn’t quite say it so nicely but he responded and for that I respect him.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO REPORTING

“But now the PUP will have to choose another leader and it’s anyone’s guess on who it might turn out to be.”

FRANCIS FONSECA

If we are going to win election every single person must understand that we need to support our leader, we need to pledge support to that new leader, whoever that new leader is we must pledge support to that leader and I think any leader coming in must make it clear that he is going to lead but they will need to support of everyone to get the job done.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO REPORTING

“And for Fonseca, it has been a learning experience but his time as a politician is over.”

FRANCIS FONSECA

Once you become the leader of the People’s United Party your ultimate objective must be to become the Prime Minister of the country and so having failed to meet that objective is obviously very disappointing to you personally but certainly the journey has been rewarding.  It has been as you know with great challenge but I certainly think it has made me a better man, a better person, it has made me stronger, it has made me more patient, it has certainly made me a more humble individual so I certainly cherish all the memories of travelling across the country, the people I have met and the people I have worked with, it’s been for me a rewarding experience.”
