NEMO Issues Advisory on Constant Rains and Possible Flooding

Just after four o’clock this evening an advisory from the National Emergency Management Organization was issued warning residents of the persistent rains expected over the weekend along with localized flooding.  The advisory reads, quote, “The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) hereby informs the general public that as the rains continue over the weekend the risk of localized flooding is likely to increase.  The forecast is for significant amount of showers over all regions of the country tonight and throughout the weekend.  Areas of concern are Corozal Town; Sarteneja; Orange Walk; villages along the old northern highway; Belize City; the coastal highway; Gales Point; Mullins River; Sarawee, Hope Creek and Dangriga.  People living in Blue Creek and along the Mopan; Macal; Belize; North Stann Creek; Bladden; Rio Grande, and Moho Rivers whose home is likely to flood are being asked to take the necessary precaution to protect life and property, if necessary move to higher ground with family or friends or to a community shelter.  NEMO Emergency Coordinators can be reached as follows;    Corozal,  Williard Levy at  668 9515; Orange Walk, Suliema Celiz at 605 5046; Northern Regional Coordinator, Mr. Aragon at 636 6094; Belize District, Mr. Calbert Budd at  602 8632; Kevin Pollard at 621 2275; San Pedro’s Timrose Augustine at 600 8672; Belmopan’s Clare Moody at 630 9791; Cayo’s Al Westby at 630 3224; Stann Creek, Victor Castillo at 630 9780 and in Toledo, Kenton Parham at 630 9787.  The NEMO Emergency Hotline is 936.  Drivers are asked to slow down and put on their hazard lights when driving through rain.”  End of quote.  NEMO is asking that their supporting agencies remain alert over the weekend as the river conditions and the extent of the localized flooding continue to be monitored.  Residents can keep in tuned to Love FM as we will be bringing updates for you over the weekend from NEMO and the National Meteorological Service.
