Thirty two year old Sherlock Myvette was stabbed several times today at the Belize Central Prison. He is at the Karl Huesner Memorial Hospital under police guard while receiving treatment. Myvette who is on remand for the 2009 murder of Belmopan taxi-driver, James Young was stabbed after he was involved in an altercation with twenty one year old Rigoberto Garcia, also on remand for murder. Garcia is accused of stabbing Myvette with a shank. CEO of the Belize Central Prison, Virgilio Murillo, says that while investigations are in its primary stage, he can share that the incident unfolded before the eyes of other inmates.

VIRGILIO MURILLO

“We are currently investigating. All I can tell you at this point in time is that there was an altercation between himself and another inmate but everything is very early yet and I do need some time to carry out the investigation. We definitely brought into the Hattieville police and they are conducting their investigation.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Do you know who the inmate is that stabbed Mr.Myvette?”

VIRGILIO MURILLO

“The inmate that stabbed him, the name that we got was Rigoberto Garcia. They do know each other because they are from the same building and their cells are next to each other so they know each other.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“This happened in front of their cells inside the building and not anywhere else?”

VIRGILIO MURILLO

“It happened in the building. I think he was going back into his cell and like I said I don’t want to say too much because we are still investigating all the circumstances surrounding this whole incident. That is exactly why we brought in the Hattieville police because we want a thorough investigation and we want to see if we can press criminal charges if we can because it’s a serious situation and it’s considered violence.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Can you say what object was used to stab Mr. Myvette?”

VIRGILIO MURILLO

“He used a make shift dagger made from steel, sharpened to a point, like a shank. We recovered the weapon and handed it over to the police.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Did other prisoners see the stabbing incident?”

VIRGILIO MURILLO

“I would believe that there were other prisoners that saw but we are doing out internal investigation and we are going to come up with some more information I guess tomorrow or a little later but for certain the police came and I think they themselves are trying to gather that information.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Were there any security officers in the area at the time?”

VIRGILIO MURILLO

“Definitely security officers were in the area and that is why I guess it was not fatal.”

Hattieville police are also investigating the matter.
