Following the murder of Anne Swaney in western Belize on January 15, Belize has been taking some hard hits on the international scene as a crime ridden country.  The negative publicity, however, stands out from ABC7 who Swaney worked for.  In an article dated as recent as Friday, February 5, ABC7 Eyewitness News referred to Belize as a country with the third highest murder rate in the world and twice the homicide rate of Chicago and higher than any city in the United States.  The article reads, in part, quote, “The attractive Belize tourism videos certainly don’t tout the crime concern, and the U.S. State Department hasn’t put Belize on its warning list of nearly 50 nations – including others in Central America – even though the fine print cites Belize high for “violent crimes such as armed robbery, home invasions, shootings, stabbings, murders, and sexual assaults…” for “tourists at resorts and on the roads.”  In this part of the world, the most popular places for Americans and Chicagoans are also the most remote and the most difficult to get to, especially after a night of rain.”  End of quote.  Love News understands that several Belizeans living in Chicago, Illinois have been trying to contact ABC7 News to express their displeasure in the erroneous statements but those calls have gone unanswered.
