“The announcement of the adjournment to those in court was made by Toledo District Magistrate Emerson Banner. Following the announcement as the Santa Cruz 13 and their team of attorneys exited the magistrate court, Love News caught up with spokesperson of the Maya Leaders Alliance Pablo Mis.

“This morning that case of the Santa Cruz 13 came up at the Punta Gorda magistrate’s court. On our part, we are prepared and we take this assault upon our leaders very seriously and we intend to ensure that we follow the application of the law to its fullest. Unfortunately the case was not heard as we wish it would today, it has been adjourned until March 30 so that is the next court date that has been set.

“I saw a team of attorneys here, there is a fairly new face there, would you comment on who the attorneys are?

“As I said we take this very seriously, we want to make sure that our clients, our leaders get a fair access to justice, we will take all necessary measures to ensure that we test out every bit of information related to this case so that is essentially the team that we have that is going to represent the Santa Cruz 13.

“Added to your team I’ve seen another gentleman, he seems to be a new member of the team.

Pablo Mis – Spokesperson Maya Leaders Alliance

“Yes he is a new member of the team, we have several new members of the team that are a part of this case. We expect that this case unfolds very quickly. We do not want the lives of 13 families in Santa Cruz to be held in limbo. We do not expect this case to be adjourned over and over, we are prepared and we are ready to take this on.”

Paul Mahung

“I’m familiar with the face of Attorney Audrey Matura Shepherd and Monica Magnusson, what are the names of the others?

Pablo Mis – Spokesperson Maya Leaders Alliance

“We have two other attorneys that have joined the team, they are international attorneys who specialize in this kind of case. Clearly for us this is not a coincidence that our leaders are being persecuted. Had they committed an offence that was clear cut I think this case would have unfolded already. We have now consistently seen adjournments after adjournments. We do not want to see this cause and put on hold the lives of families so we will be pursuing this case to the fullest.”

Paul Mahung

“Now for the sake of our listeners and viewers what is the real cause of this adjournment?”

Pablo Mis – Spokesperson Maya Leaders Alliance

“Essentially what we understand from the court today is that the DPP’s office will take over this case and we understand that they were not available to be before the court today. We wanted to make sure that the laws related to applying for an adjournment were followed and that is something that the attorneys and the magistrate debated over. We want to make sure that we make this case proceed as fast as possible and that our families can continue their lives.”

Paul Mahung

“Love News asked Pablo Mes about the number of adjournments so far and he replied that at that moment he had lost track of the number. Unofficially it can be recalled that the Santa Cruz 13 had previously appeared in the Punta Gorda magistrate’s court five different times last year and so far once in this year until then next court date on March 30.
