Southern Villager Speaks of Guatemalan Settlers on Belize’s Territory

Updated: March 9, 2016

Wil Maheia of the Belize Territorial Volunteers brought up an important point last week. He pointed out that Guatemalan families have been illegally squatting in several villages in southern Belize. According to Maheia, more than five hundred Guatemalans have erected their houses inside these villages. During the protest yesterday, Reyes Chun of San Antonio Village in Toledo told the media that they have been feeling the negative effects brought upon by these illegal Guatemalan squatters.

Chun is also the leader of the Toledo Eco Tourism Association. When asked about the illegal settling, Prime Minister Dean Barrow said he is not aware of it.
