Last weekend the news of a traffic incident in Orange Walk District involving the PUP’s Area Representative for Orange Walk South, Jose Abelardo Mai circulated around the country with questions as to whether the 46-year-old politician was under the influence of alcohol and had he been speeding.  Tonight, we have gotten a copy of the results of Mai’s urine test which was done at the Belize Medical Associates and came out negative for alcohol content.  As for the speeding, that is yet to be ascertained by the investigators.  Mai was at the PUP’s National Executive meeting this morning and did entertain the media briefly.

“All I can tell you is that I am hoping that she recovers. My attorney will instruct me exactly when to speak to the media and what to say but right now the most important thing to me is the health of the lady. I’m praying for her speedy recovery.”

The incident occurred on Friday, April 1 in the Trial Farm area in front of the San Martin Gas Station where Julia Arana was hit.  The incident happened just after eight o’clock last night when Mai was heading to Corozal in his 4-door Toyota Hilux pickup truck.  Mai stopped to render aid to Arana and took her to the Northern Regional Hospital where she was stabilized and then transferred to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where she is listed as being stable.
