The Belize Progressive Party has issued a release expressing solidarity with Belizeans.  In that release, the BPP has not only condemned what they have dubbed as military provocation by Guatemala but has also called on the general public to remain calm yet vigilant.  The release goes on to speak of a collaboration effort with the territorial volunteers.  The statement reads in part, quote, “In keeping with our unwavering commitment to safeguard the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Belizean nation, we submit our active support to ensure that in the event of further escalation of aggression by the Guatemalan Forces, Belize is prepared.  The BPP offers to organise a bonafide Belize People’s Brigade, which shall morph the Belize Territorial Volunteers (BTV) into an ancillary support outfit, comprised of citizen volunteers to be trained by retired and former Belize security personnel.  The intent of this effort is to provide support, to our service men and women, so as to demonstrate a collective-national readiness to defend all 8,867 sq. miles of our homeland – BELIZE.  In conclusion, we call on the GOB to immediately implement a plan to increase our armed forces to at least 10,000 full-time enlisted men and women, with an additional 20,000 reserves.  With the goal of the Belize People’s Brigade recruiting another 20,000 civilian volunteers, Belize shall be in a position to show we are seriously committed to defend our territorial integrity.”  End of quote.  This release was sent out over the weekend and there has been no indication whether this position has since changed, considering the PM’s conference this morning.
