As we have reported earlier, Will Maheia and the Belize Territorial Volunteers are adamant on going to the Sarstoon this weekend to commemorate the 1859 Treaty which was signed 157 years ago.  Prime Minister Dean Barrow was firm in saying that the current climate is not conducive for such an expedition and as such has discouraged the BTV from going through with this trip.  BDF Commander David Jones says that they have no intention of accompanying them this weekend but a meeting remains on schedule to attempt to dissuade them.

“No, we don’t intend to provide any support, we are cautioning them to try and listen and heed the advice that we are going to give them to not go into the area at least at this time. I expect to have a meeting with them tomorrow in Punta Gorda, myself and the CEO from the Minister of Foreign Affairs where will sit down with Mr. Maheia and his team and we will try to convince him not to go. We are not going to stop any Belizeans from going but at this time where it could be a bit volatile we ask them not to go at this time. We are aware of his passion, we are aware of his patriotism but I believe that reasoning and logic in regards to the issues that have been evolving due to the shooting incident he will be able to listen to us. We are not going to stop Belizeans, we are not going to stop him, we are just going to try and ask him and reason with him to give us an opportunity to try and work out the situation peacefully. Details of that interview or meeting will come out based on the questions that he has and I believe we will be able to convince him but it’s up to him. If we can unite, join together as one nation it’s going to be the best but if we have different people, different organizations opposing each other we are not going to solve the issue. It’s better that we have a united front in dealing with this issue because we have the same aim, the same goals and we should try to achieve the same thing by reasoning with one another.”

As was announced last Friday by the Belize National Teachers Union, they too will be accompanying the territorial volunteers and the Belize Progressive Party had expressed interest in teaming up with the BTV as well.  Love News will be following this story closely and if the BTV decides to proceed, we will be on site to report on the expedition
