Less than an hour prior to this morning’s press briefing by the Belize Council of Churches, they had met with the Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno along with other members of the People’s United Party to get their feedback and views on the Belize/Guatemala situation as they had done some days ago with the Prime Minister of Belize, Dean Barrow.  During today’s meeting, however, the issue of Saturday’s trip to Sarstoon came up and the council had asked Briceno that they refrain from carrying through with the expedition.

As it relates to the role of the national security, particularly, the Belize Defense Force and the Belize Coast Guard, CEO George Lovell told Love News, that there has been no request for support by these units and that this expedition will be regarded as the previous one held since the regulation was put in place.  CEO Lovell added, quote, “The Government agencies are obligated to carry out the laws of Belize.  The Leader of the Opposition is not above the law norare the Parliamentarians. The security forces will carry out their mandate which is to ensure that law and order are maintained.”  End of quote.
