The National Garifuna Council has condemned the killing of John Jay Rodriguez.  As has been reported, Rodriguez was shot and killed on Friday night inside a gaming establishment in Dangriga. In its release the NGC says it was a senseless killing of one of its sons, a musician, progressive youth, and father.  It goes on to say quote “this cowardly act of taking innocent lives has brought discontent to all residents; therefore, it should not be tolerated in our peaceful and beautiful Garifuna communities or other communities.” The NGC says it is appalled with the numerous murders and lack of convictions in our communities and urges residents to work with the police by sharing information to assist with accurate details for ongoing investigations. The release ends by expressing condolences to Rodriguez’ wife, child, other family members and by extension the Hopkins and Dangriga communities for losing a young, dynamic, creative, talented, mannerly, and productive Garifuna brother.  Earlier this week it was reported that Police had detained a sixteen year old for questioning, however we understand he has since been released.
