Two medical officers from the Ministry of Health and Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital will be attending the “2016 Workshop on Chronic Disease Control in Taipei, Taiwan from July 20 to August 2, 2016.  Dr. Francis Morey, from the Ministry of Health and Dr. Alexandrine Martinez, will leave the country in mid-July to attend the sessions that aim to share Taiwan’s experience on policy planning, practices, system and framework of chronic disease control. It will focus mainly on obesity-related diseases. In a release coming out of the Government’s Press Office, it noted that it is important for Belize to address these types of diseases since the number of persons being overweight or obese in Belize is high and these can contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, among others.  The workshop will also deal with policy making issues in order to assist attendants from partner countries in dealing with the chronic disease control. For this matter the attendants will visit government agencies and medical institutions in charge of obesity prevention, chronic disease prevention and chronic disease screening in Taiwan. It is the belief of both Belize and Taiwan that through this workshop the prevention and control system on chronic disease in Belize will be well developed.
