No Resignation for John Saldivar
The rumour mill in Belize has been working in overdrive over the last few weeks especially since the beheading of Pastor Llewellyn Lucas in Belmopan, Cayo District. The most recent one is that the Minister of National Security, John Saldivar is looking to resign. We have been trying to reach Saldivar yesterday but our messages and calls went unanswered. Subsequent to that we have been reaching out to persons in the Barrow administration to see if anyone is aware of a resignation tendered yesterday but we have come up empty ….. Well, sort of. In our interview with Speaker of the House, Michael Peyrefitte today we asked him if he is aware of any such move by Saldivar and if he believes that Saldivar should resign.
“Who is calling for his resignation? I don’t know; I just got back. I don’t know what he should or shouldn’t do. John is an intelligent individual. I think if a person is faced with certain things they should consider resigning but if there is no evidence against him and he knows that there is nothing against him why should resign?”
We also spoke with Chief Executive Officer in the National Security Ministry, Retired Colonel George Lovell who spoke of what he knows on the matter.
“I don’t know of any discussion that Minister Saldivar has in handing up his portfolio as Minister of National Security. I believe you had some discussion with him yesterday you should have asked him because I’ll tell you he hasn’t had any with me. I have spoken to him as late as last night and he didn’t give any indication that he would want to hand up his post just yet. There are a number of activities that are still pending that he would want to accomplish before he calls it quits with the Ministry of National Security.”
Late this evening Minister John Saldivar furnished us with a comment via text, saying, “Hell no. I have done nothing wrong, I am guilty of no criminal wrongdoing and I will not let the outrageous, baseless and relentless attacks on my character break my lifelong commitment to serve my country and people.” End of quote.
