International Youth Day  2016 is being celebrated today in Belize with an initiative that focuses on civic pride, an attribute that the Youth Department seeks to instil in young persons.  Several young persons were divided into groups this morning and dispatched to various parts of the city where they embarked on a clean-up campaign following Hurricane Earl which hit Belize about a week ago.  The Special Envoy for Women and Children, Kim Simplis-Barrow issued a statement on the occasion saying, quote, “this year’s international youth day is being celebrated under the theme, “The Road to 2030: Eradicating poverty and achieving sustainable consumption and production” A more fitting theme could not have been chosen since majority of the world’s population of young people come from the poorest and least developed countries, whose socio-economic development highly depends on sustainable  practices.”  End of quote.  Simplis-Barrow also spoke on the crucial importance to have young people participate and celebrate this day since no one is more impacted that them and no one is better equipped to effect change in societies.
