US Ambassador Commends Chief Justice on His Ruling of Sodomy Law

Updated: August 19, 2016

On May 29, 2016 the LGBT flag was hoisted on the compound of the US Embassy.  It was done as a consequence of the White House sending out a Presidential Proclamation declaring the month of June to be the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month.  Almost three months later Belize’s Chief Justice, Kenneth Benjamin handed down his ruling as it pertains to Section 53 of the Criminal Code of Belize.  The Chief Justice declared the section unconstitutional and ruled that sodomy should be legalized.  It is a decision that the Prime Minister, Dean Barrow says the Government will not appeal.  US Ambassador to Belize, Carlos Moreno spoke of the ruling and the Government’s decision on the matter.

Ambassador Moreno says that people are free to have their opinions on the ruling but that no one should resort to hate or violence.  He added that education on the issue is important.
