The environmental community is up in arms over Cabinet’s approval for seismic testing to be conducted in the offshore area of Belize’s territory.  The Belize Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage, Oceana Belize, World Wildlife Fund, Healthy Reefs Initiative, the Belize Audubon Society and the Belize Institute of Environmental Law and Policy are of the view that seismic survey is invasive and may cause long term negative effects on marine life and habitats. A press conference was held this morning at the offices of the Belize Audubon Society where the leaders of these environmental groups raised their concerns.

According to the Vice President of Oceana Belize, Janelle Oceana, seismic testing leads to oil exploration.

There is no sign that Cabinet is considering of retracting its decision so we asked the environmentalists if they are considering legal action. The question was answered by Dr. Candy Gonzalez of the Belize Institute of Environmental Law and Policy

This evening the government sent out a release informing that consultations have been scheduled to take place in the coming weeks.
