San Pedro Police shot and killed a fugitive last night. Police has confirmed that 25 year old Juan Carlos Martinez, who had been on the run for months, was shot and killed during a shootout on La Isla Bonita. Reports are that a tip led police officers to the San Pedrito Area near the lagoon. There they encountered Martinez, who upon seeing police began firing shots in their direction. Police returned fire. Martinez attempted to escape but minutes later, his body was retrieved from the lagoon. Commanding Officer for San Pedro, Superintendent Sandra Bodden, gave us more details.

SANDRA BODDEN

“The police received information last night that a wanted person Juan Carlos Martinez was in a house in the San Pedrito area. As a result they visited the location where upon arrival they surrounded the house and identified themselves as police officers. Upon doing so a person ran out of the house jumped into the lagoon and was pursued by police. Whilst in pursuit of the said person the police heard what was gunshots and the shots were being fired in their direction. As a result they returned fire and after a few minutes of silence they then went to the area where the male person was seen in a lifeless condition. He was later identified as Juan Carlos Martinez who was a wanted person, he had escaped from police custody. He was a person known to the police and had been convicted in Benque Viejo in 2015 for firearm and ammunition offences and was serving  a ten year sentence.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO

“From his escape in December of last year do you believe that he was in San Pedro all this time?”

SANDRA BODDEN

“We had received several tips that he was in San Pedro however the checks into those information had proved fruitless  at the time.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO

“Do you have any information that someone else was helping him out?”

SANDRA BODDEN

“Like I said he had escaped from police custody last December and we had received information that he was still here on the island so it’s quite possible that there may have been residents in San Pedro who may have been assisting him.”

Martinez received several gunshot wounds to the upper part of his body and succumbed to injuries. The body of Martinez now lies at the KHMH Morgue awaiting a post mortem examination. The Commissioner of Police has directed that a thorough criminal and internal investigation be conducted into this matter.
