Twenty-two year old Colombian national Jessica Gonzalez Roman, charged with assaulting 39-year-old, immigration officer Ady Pacheco and damaging her eye glasses, pled guilty to the charges when she appeared today before Magistrate Norman Rodriguez. She was fined two hundred and fifty dollars plus five dollars cost of court and was ordered to pay one thousand two hundred dollars in compensation to Pacheco. She paid the fine and compensation forthwith. The incident occurred on October 28 at Phillip Goldson International Airport. Pacheco, who is pregnant, reported to the police that when she was escorting Roman to Avianca Airlines, Roman began to curse and she became fearful, so she got another immigration officer to assist her. She told police that Roman then grabbed her in her hair and used her hand to knock her eye glasses from her face, damaging it in the process. As a result, police arrested and charged Roman with common assault and damage to property. Roman told Magistrate Rodriguez that she acted the way she did because she felt that Pacheco was treating her like a prostitute, insisting that she was on a business trip even though she explained that she came to Belize to meet her boyfriend and they were to go to San Pedro for vacation.
