24-year-old, Jeon Peebles was found dead this morning on a feeder road in Hattieville Village, Belize District.  Peebles’ body reportedly bore gunshot wounds to his body.  Commander of the Rural Eastern Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Edward Broaster briefed the media this afternoon on what their preliminary findings are.

EDWARD BROASTER

“At about 8am this morning we were called out to an area between the Burrell Boom / Hattieville Road where the lifeless body of one male person was discovered. That individual was learnt to be one Jeon Kyle Peebles of a Croton Lane address in Belize City. The scene was processed and we discovered a number of expended shells on the scene and that matter at this time is being investigated. There were several gunshot wounds to the body of the deceased.”

The news of Peebles’ death has cast a dark cloud upon his family who was gathered at the hospital this morning to identify his body.  The family had been initially informed that he was shot once to the head but that proved false when they saw the young man’s body brought into the morgue in the back of a police vehicle.  Peebles is the young father of a three year old little girl and was last seen by neighbours and relatives last night when he was picked up by police officers.  Now, the family strongly believes that the police are behind Peebles’ murder.

RELATIVE TO PEEBLES

“I received one phone call this morning from a WPC, name unknown because she did not state her name but she told me that they found Jeon’s body on a feeder road off Hattieville with a single gunshot to the head. She also told me that they needed somebody to identify the body and that is why we are here at the hospital.”

RENEE TRUJILLO

“What did you see when they brought the body?”

RELATIVE

“Well I saw multiple gunshots. To the abdomen area, to the left arm, and to the face and head. Multiple gunshots. This is ridiculous.”

RENEE TRUJILLO

“Are you certain that the police were behind this?”

RELATIVE

“From speculation I was told by someone right outside the hospital that Gian was picked up by two officers and was carried away because he had a little bit of weed on him and apparently my speculations are that probably when they caught him with the weed he was trying to run knowing that he had the weed on him. He was full of sand from head to toe.”

RENEE TRUJILLO

“What are you asking the police to do at this time?”

RELATIVE

“We want them to have a thorough investigation. They must know who were working at the time and which zone people were working at the time. All we want is justice because this is ridiculous.”

ACP Broaster says they have gotten reports that he was detained by police and are currently following that lead.

EDWARD BROASTER

“We have received those reports that he allegedly was picked up by police last night and we are investigating that matter as to who may have picked him up. We are investigating those reports to see what transpired between the time of him being picked up and the time that lead to his untimely death. One thing we will say is that we rule out robbery as he was found with a few pieces of jewellry and cash on him.”

Love News spoke with Peebles’ sister who shared with us what her brother has been through and his encounter with police.

SISTER TO PEEBLES

“From my experience and from what he told me. He told me that every time the police get him they take him up the road and they tell him to run and that if he run they would shoot him. Every Time they go to his house they would chase after him and shoot at him. They don’t just go and arrest him and take him to the station they always chase him and shoot  after him and my sister and I can say, because I made a report to the police station, when they came to my house to look for my brother they shot at him in my yard and in front of my and my sister they said that they wanted him dead.”

RENEE TRUJILLO

“They told you that personally?”

SISTER

“They said it in front of me and when we told them to remember that they have loved ones they replied by saying that they didn’t care and if we didn’t shut up they would arrest us to.”

RENEE TRUJILLO

“Did you make a report about that?”

SISTER

“Yes I did.”

RENEE TRUJILLO

“And what came out of that ?”

SISTER

“Nothing.”

RENEE TRUJILLO

“You said that he has had run ins with the law and whether police would pursue him he would run what was his explanation for always running?”

SISTER

“He explained to me the reason why he always ran is because police were always beating him up. They always beat him and beat him bad. In late last year he was on the news because the police beat him up bad and I will not say that my brother was perfect and he didn’t do anything wrong. Yes he did his wrong but the police should not take it in their hands to hurt someone like that. Leave it to the law, let him get locked up, not kill him like a dog.”

According to an eyewitness who says she will be giving her statement to the investigators later today, she was on the street when she saw the police detain Peebles between 6:30 and seven o’clock last night near his home just off Mahogany Street in Belize City.
