Weekend Homicide on Ambergris Caye adds to Rising Crime on the Island

The San Pedro community has seen an increase in homicide cases recently. Within the last week alone two men were gunned down in the San Mateo area. The latest murder was that of Antonio Paguada which occurred on Friday night at around eleven thirty. We spoke with Deputy Officer Commanding the San Pedro Police Station, Inspector Henry Jemoth who told us what the investigation has revealed so far.

“Police was called out to the area of San Mateo in San Pedro town. Reports were that shots were being fired in the area. Police responded to the location and they found one person, a lifeless body on the ground. Initial investigation stated that persons were socializing when a lone gunman fired several gunshots at this person. The person succumbed to his injuries at the location. Subsequent to that police conducted an investigation in the area to determine if this can be tied into the other murder that occurred a couple days ago. We have some persons in custody at this time that we are investigating. We are getting assistance from Belize City Eastern Division North who will assist us with additionally investigators at this time.”

Jemoth stated that the police have taken note of the sprout in violence in the town and are reinforcing their security measures.

“We have stepped up patrol within the area. As I mentioned we only had a patrol in the area who left to check another investigation of a shooting. The teams that go and check these shootings must be properly armed and must have their vests so we had that team move away to check another report but to see that we have the special branch personnel and all the other persons to try to alleviate and try to bring back San Pedro to normalcy.”

Police suspect that the strings of shootings that have undertaken the island are motivated by gang sparring.
