On Thursday, October 27 we told you of the decision made by the Guatemalan Congress to have the country go to a referendum on whether their territorial claim against Belize be taken to the International Court of Justice.  While the United Kingdom has already congratulated the Congress on their decision to move the process forward, yesterday the European Union expressed their pleasure at the decision referring to it as a positive aspect to the entire situation.  Recently, we had also reported that while Guatemala’s Congress has given the green light to proceed there is the issue of the financial burden that the referendum will place on the country’s economy and as such the Guatemalans have requested monies from both the UK and the European Union.  With the ratification from the Congress, it is anticpated that both countries will embark on their education campaign surrounding the ICJ whilst they prepare for the referendum process.
