Today, Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno, held a press briefing in which he spoke of the latest incident in the Sarstoon. As we have been reporting, Maya Leaders were traversing up the Sarstoon River last week when they were stopped by members of the Guatemalan Armed Forces. According to the Guatemalan Military, the Maya Leaders who form part of the Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management (SATIIM) did not follow the right protocol, a procedure that the Ministry of Defense says does not exist. In his statement, Briceno told the media that the Government has no plans that deal with incidents like these.
