Corozal Police is trying to figure out who killed 36 year old Armando Pelayo Jr and why.  Just before three o’clock this morning, Pelayo ran out of his home on G Street shouting for help. He had been shot and chopped several times. According to Corozal’s Commanding Officer, Superintendent Dennis Arnold, his officers were on mobile patrol following a heavily tinted suspicious white car with US license plates. That car led police to Pelayo’s house where a neighbor alerted them that he had been attacked.

DENNIS ARNOLD

“Two persons alighted that said vehicle, a male and a female. The police officers alighted their patrol mobile where they saw a female person coming from Mr.Pelayo’s house. At the same time the neighbors were yelling to the police officers for help. The officers went to the neighbors house where they saw Mr.Armando Pelayo, 36 years old, he was bleeding profusely with what appeared to be chop wounds to the head, back and the hands. He was transported to the Corozal Community Hospital where upon arrival the doctor pronounced him dead. Closer investigation revealed that he had a gunshot wound to the right side of the back. Everything happened so quickly, apparently there was a misunderstanding with Mr.Pelayo and someone else, after the incident took place at Mr.Pelayo’s house apparently he went over to the neighbor to ask for assistance but then the police officers they were trailing that heavily tinted white car and the car led them to that house so it was just coincidence that the police were doing their job and it led them to that house.”

“And then they responded at the same time to the distress calls of the neighbors?”

DENNIS ARNOLD

“Exactly because Mr.Pelayo was there.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO

“Hence they were not paying attention to the people in the vehicle.”

DENNIS ARNOLD

“They paid attention to the vehicle but they believe that our primary role and function is protection and preservation of life and property so they took Mr.Pelayo. They knew the person, the two people that got out of the vehicle, we are looking for them and if they are seeing this interview we would like them to come in because we believe they can assist with this investigation.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO

“Has the person that Mr.Pelayo had an altercation with been identified ?”

DENNIS ARNOLD

“Not as yet because as I said we are looking  for these persons.”

The female that exited Pelayo’s house is believed to be his common law wife. We are told that two other persons were in the car- another woman and a man. Pelayo shared two children with his common law wife and they too cannot be located. His in laws are from Guatemala but, at the moment, police do not believe that they have crossed the border. So now police are trying to ascertain the motive. Police have no suspects and are exploring all theories. According to Arnold, Pelayo had been involved in several altercations recently.

DENNIS ARNOLD

“I can say that at about 11pm last night they had called saying that he was behaving disorderly at at business place but upon the arrival of the police at that business place he was nowhere to be found.  Mr.Pelayo was in custody about four to five days ago here for, he had an altercation with another person.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO

“Are you able to share the nature of the altercation for which he had been arrested prior?”

DENNIS ARNOLD

“That was something very minor, he just got into an altercation with another male person and they were abusing each other verbally and Mr.Pelayo got mad and punched the guy.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO

“So you don’t believe that that altercation had developed to something like his murder ?”

DENNIS ARNOLD

“No I don’t think so.”

No signs of forced entry were observed at the house. Arnold said that when the common law wife left the house, she was not seen taking any luggage with her. We spoke to several neighbors and they told us that Pelayo’s relationship was anything but peaceful. They told us that the couple fought constantly. In fact, just recently Pelayo had served time for stabbing his mother in law. Inside the house police found a bloody knife and machete and three live rounds of ammunition.
