“On Monday December 12 at about 5:27pm information was received of a shooting incident in Santa Elena town involving a police officer and his twelve year old child. Initial investigations revealed that the corporal attached to the tourism police unit in the San Ignacio police formation was at home in his room cleaning his firearm when his firearm accidentally discharged and hit the child in his right leg. He received a flesh wound basically it entered her right leg and exited but it did not hit any bones. It was just a flesh wound. The scene was processed and statements have been recorded and at the conclusion of the investigation the case file will be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution for her advice. The mother of the child and the stepfather their statements corroborate one another in fact the mother even said that the child is very close to her step father.”

The tourism police officer  is still on duty awaiting the directive of the DPP
