Police are suspecting that robbery may have been the motive for a homicide in rural Belize that left 44-year-old, John Ortiz, a Biscayne Village resident, dead.  Police officers attached to the Rural Executive Division were on patrol heading north on the Philip Goldson Highway this morning at around three o’clock when they encountered a body on the right shoulder of the road between miles nineteen and twenty.  Further inspection of the body found that the man, who was dressed in a black shirt and camouflage pants was severely beaten with apparent wounds to his face and head as well as a shoe imprint on the right side of his head.  His body was taken to the morgue at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital just after four o’clock this morning where it awaits a post mortem examination.  Love News spoke to one of Ortiz’s friends.

FRIEND OF DECEASED

“The morning when I woke up, my friend, when I came out my friend told me that they killed John so I asked him what? Because John didn’t fool around with anybody and he didn’t trouble anyone. So I don’t know why they killed him or of they knocked him down. I knew that he would only catch the bus and stop off at the Maskall junction and then go home so I don’t know if he usually walked on the highway or not. I live on the highway and so far I haven’t seen him pass, I got out at night and I never saw him pass.  Well I’ve known John for a long time and so far he’s just been a cool guy, he would drink his rum and not a trouble maker.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“He didn’t say that he was being threatened or something like that or anything was going on with his life?”

FRIEND OF DECEASED

“No, John was always laughing and talking and running jokes and things like that. It really surprised me because when I heard the news I didn’t believe it.”

One person is currently detained for questioning into this latest investigation.
