Looting at the Maya Temple in the North?

Updated: February 7, 2017

Reports last night spread like fire that a Maya site had been uncovered in the Caledonia Village in Corozal. We also received reports that villagers were taking all the ancient artifacts that they could from the site. An archaeologist was dispatched to Caledonia Village to see if the reports were true. According to Senior Archaeologist at the National Institute for Culture and History, Dr. Allan Moore, what was found is a “chultin”, which is an underground storage space the Maya used during their time.

Dr. Moore says that they are the in process suggesting to the Government to adjust the penalties for these types of offences.
