At around 3:40 on Saturday morning Belize City police were called out to Maskall Street in Belize City. There they met 72 year old Robert Ramclam who told police he was asleep when he heard noises coming out of his shop which is a few feet away from his home. He decided to investigate and as he was heading to his shop he noticed a man walking away. A few seconds later, he noticed his shop was on fire. Ramclam says he knows who attempted to burn down his shop and why.

ROBERT RAMCLAM

“So I quickly called the police and the fire department. By the time they got here all of us got together and we took buckets and tried to out the fire. The fire persons did come and they said that it was arson and they said that it was kerosene and even the guy said that it was kerosene that he used, he said he was sorry that it was kerosene that he used and that he should have used gasoline so that the shop would blow up. Then when I came out I saw the guy run away.”

“Why would you say someone would want to destroy the shop?”

ROBERT RAMCLAM

“Well they have a problem with my grandson, not with me, but with my grandson. So they won’t do my grandson anything, they will take it out on me.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Your grandson lives here in the yard?”

ROBERT RAMCLAM

“Yes ma’am.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“And you’re positive that you saw this individual clearly to identify him ?”

ROBERT RAMCLAM

“Yes. If the police don’t take care of it, it will continue. If the police don’t try to do something about it.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“The person you saw that night they have been detained by police already?”

ROBERT RAMCLAM

“No they already let him go.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Is he from this area?”

ROBERT RAMCLAM

“Yes, he lives right back there. But what happened is that I even asked the police why they would release a criminal like that, he has had two or three bails already for the things he’s done. It’s not only me that he’s done things to; so why would they let him go like that? This is a bad crime. They shouldn’t’ release him so they told me whenever the officer who did the arrest comes down tomorrow they will pick them up again.”

The building was partially damaged. Ramclam, with the help of his neighbors, managed to bring the fire under control.
