NEMO San Pedro Gets New Office and Coordinator

Preparations for the upcoming 2017 Hurricane season are well underway in Belize.  On Ambergris Caye, a new office was obtained for the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) with sufficient space that will lend to the efficiency of the emergency workers in carrying out their responsibilities in the event of a storm or hurricane.  NEMO Minister, Edmond Castro was on the island yesterday where he conducted the official opening of the office located on the upper flat of the Wings establishment on Coconut Drive.  In addition, Vanessa Parham was installed as the new NEMO Coordinator for the Belize Rural South which encompasses Caye Caulker and San Pedro.  Minister Castro was accompanied by his Chief Executive Officer, Ruth Meighan; Regional Coordinator for the Belize and Cayo Districts, Al Westby and NEMO’s Logistics Officer, Shereen Reyes.   Preliminary predictions for the 2017 hurricane season shows a total of eleven named storms, four hurricanes and two major hurricanes, either Category three or higher.  The hurricane season opens on June 1.
