In a few months Assistant Commissioner of Police Chester Williams is expected to take up his post as the Head of the Professional Standards Branch in Belmopan. ACP Williams is currently the Commander of Eastern Division South and today ACP Williams told the media that he is comfortable with his transfer.

CHESTER WILLIAMS

“I am a public police officer. I am subject to be transferred and the Commissioner is the Commissioner. He decides where he puts his senior officers. If he thinks that I am best suited to serve in Belmopan in the capacity that I am going then I go with the Commissioner’s decision that it is time for me to move on and do something different. I know Mr. Vidal, he is a friend of mine. Vidal is an outstanding officer, I am sure that when he comes he will assess the situation on the ground and he is no fool. He knows what he needs to do from what he will not be required to do and he will ensure that he continues the good work we have started on Southside.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Ok but there have been very pointed remarks made against Mr. Vidal and his history with the GSU. He has earned a bad name on the Southside of Belize particularly but with the gangs in general. Do you think that he is being brought here to bring pressure on them?”

CHESTER WILLIAMS

“Well I am not going to comment on that. I cannot say anything on that. That is their belief. I think otherwise and when Vidal comes I am sure that his work will speak for itself.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Sir, are you comfortable with your transfer?”

CHESTER WILLIAMS

“Yes it is a transferable job. We must move on. The Commissioner needs me to serve in a different capacity and I am here to serve the commissioner and I will do that.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Vidal has gone on record to repudiate community policing. In 2011 he told me that it didn’t work. It hasn’t worked.”

CHESTER WILLIAMS

“At one point in time, I too repudiated community policing so it’s just the way it is.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Sir do you believe that with Mr. Vidal now coming here, all of your efforts in Community Policing will be wiped out?”

CHESTER WILLIAMS

“I don’t think so. Vidal is an excellent officer, he’s exceptional. I am sure that he will assess the situation on the ground and see what he can do and whatever I can do to assist Mr Vidal to ensure that peace prevails in our city, I will assist him.”

Dianne Finnegan of the Youth Apprenticeship Program has worked closely with ACP Williams and the embattled youths of Southside Belize City. Finnegan comments on Williams’s transfer.

DIANNE FINNEGAN

What do we normally beginning June, and I think I heard some announcement today reference that. We start to prepare and put things in place for the hurricane should it come. I am saying and the father has spared us so many times from hurricane because he really sees Belize as potential so there is no destruction here, it is humans who destroy themselves so when it comes to that decision which should be in July everything that we are doing here right now is showing why Chester should remain in place and I’m praying and hoping that they give him the opportunity to make this work and if it doesn’t work I will be the first one to say lets’ bring in something new, let’s make those changes and bring in something new.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Do you believe that by bringing Hurricane Vidal to this area that all these community efforts will be wiped out?”

DIANNE FINNEGAN

Don’t  let Mr.Vidal become my enemy because he thinks I’m calling him a hurricane. No I think that what I would like to do is really meet with him and find out what it is that he brings to the table that is going to continue because if you listen in politics when they speak they always say that the things put in place from one party is normally destroyed by the other when they come on board. So if a good thing is in place how are you going to continue that good thing because once you are on board I am with you all the way.”

Gang members are not happy that ACP Williams is being transferred.

LOCAL REPORTER

“With Vidal coming in to Belize City do you think he will mess things up?”

GANG MEMBER #1

“I don’t know, I don’t know if he will work.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Do you want Chester to stay in Belize.”

GANG MEMBER #2

“They have to make that man stay. That man deserves that post. We are going back to the same thing if the man moves, it will be worse.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“Do you think Vidal coming to Belize City will mess things up?”

GANG MEMBER #2

“Corruption because they will chance people for nothing.”

LOCAL REPORTER

“But if the man shows that he will be different are you willing to give him a chance?”

GANG MEMBER #2

“He has to come to us good. This is not the first time that Chester has done this, this has happened more than once. Yes people cry about the killing but it’s nothing compared to before, the statistics prove it. So if Vidal should come in we can’t be angry, Chester has no power over that, we have no power over that to make Vidal not come in as much as we are supporting Chester. If that will happen that will happen, he just has to prove himself a man like Chester did that is all. If he can’t prove himself as a man like Chester he will not get the respect that he should get and he will have to fight for his respect and we know what that will be on his behalf. He will use his muscle to get his respect and the peoples should know what will happen, we are not telling you what will happen people will see what will happen.”

GANG MEMBER #3

“To be real, that man held the peace in this environment, without Chester this neighborhood would be something else.”
