Police News: Murder, Firearms and Drugs

Under the category of major crimes, there was one murder over the weekend which occurred in southern Belize.  22-year-old, Santiago Garcia lost his life following an incident in Trio Village, Toledo District.  Garcia was in the company of Arturo Choc; they were walking in the village just before eleven o’clock when they came under attack by a group of men.  Garcia was chopped to the back of the head, the cheek and the wrist while his friend was chopped to the head.  The men along with one of the attackers were being taken to the Independence Polyclinic when Garcia died.  The attacker that was injured to the right hand has since been identified as Leonardo Ba.  Ba is under police guard at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.  There was a predawn operation done Sunday morning through collaboration with the Quick Response Team and Special Branch of San Ignacio Police which yielded a double barrel homemade shotgun in the Hot Point Area of Santa Elena Town.  The firearm was deposited as found property.  There were other instances of found property where police came across a dozen live nine millimeter rounds yesterday afternoon in an abandoned lot on Cran Street in Belize City.  Also in Belize City, 30-year-old, Fenton Reyes of an address in the Lake Independence Area was arrested and charged for possession of controlled drugs, possession of prohibited firearm and kept ammunition without gun license.  Reyes was intercepted by a team on mobile patrol on Krooman Road yesterday evening just before five o’clock.  Upon searching Reyes, police found four point five grams of marijuana, a point twenty two pen gun with a live round.  Out west, three men were charged jointly with drug trafficking after the vehicle they were traveling in yielded over four hundred and fifty grams of marijuana following a police search.  Just before eleven o’clock yesterday morning a mobile patrol team was in the Shawville Area of San Ignacio Town when they intercepted a gold sedan which was being driven by 47-year-old, Peter Mendoza.  The other two men charged are later impounded.  The three persons arrested are 32-year-old, Luis Alberto Flores and 22-year-old, Felipe Alberto Guzman Jr.  The car was impounded.  In the Corozal District, 46-year-old, Marta Interiano and 43-year-old, Sergio Perez were charged for kept firearm and ammunition without a gun license after police conducted a search of their home in the Hidden Hills Layout and found a nine millimeter pistol with magazine containing five live rounds of ammunition.  The search was done yesterday morning at around four o’clock.
