At the start of the week, the Government of Panama announced that it would be severing ties with the Republic of China, Taiwan. The Panamanian government said it recognized there was “only one China” and considered Taiwan part of it. China regards Taiwan as a breakaway province and Panama is the latest to switch sides, leaving Taiwan with about twenty allies. Here in Belize, the Taiwanese Ambassador, Charles Keh-yue Liu, says he is not happy with the Panamanian Government .The number of countries recognizing Taiwan has dwindled in recent years as China’s importance has grown. International reports are that China is courting other countries with the hopes that other states would follow Panama. Ambassador Charles Keh-yue Liu is confident that Belize will not follow suit.
