US teenager dies in road traffic incident in southern Belize

On Saturday afternoon, 18-year-old US national, Devin Robert Merriell was killed after the motorcycle he was on, collided into a tow head driven by 24-year-old Abraham Friessen of Guinea Grass Village in the Orange Walk District. The incident occurred at the Bocawina National Park junction in the Stann Creek District. Two other road traffic incidents were reported which left a couple individuals hospitalized. On Saturday evening, there was a collision between a James Bus driven by 56-year-old Clyde Tasher and a Toyota Tacoma driven by 47-year-old Marcelino Umana of Cotton Tree Village. The incident which occurred in St. Matthew’s Village on the George Price Highway, left Umana with injuries to his ears and back, while his wife Suyapa Rodriguez, who was flung from the vehicle, suffered a broken left arm, broken shoulder blades and six broken ribs. No one on the bus was injured. On Sunday afternoon, two persons were injured when the motorcycle they were on, collided into the guard rail in St. Margaret’s Village on the Hummingbird Highway. The motorcycle was being driven by 21-year-old Jorge Rodriguez who lost control of the cycle and crashed into the metal railing. Rodriguez suffered a cut to the left hand and a cut wound to the head. His passenger sustained a fractured jaw, multiple cut wounds to the head and face and superficial abrasions to the chest.
