San Ignacio police intercepted the trafficking of over 58 pounds of marijuana on Wednesday. ASP Cowo shared more details of the bust.

Upon inspection of the vehicle Police found two crocus bag containing Cannabis behind the driver’s seat. The Cannabis was weighed and it amount to 26.45 Kilograms equivalent to almost 60 pounds of Cannabis. Police is so far looking for two male persons that were seen fleeing from the vehicle.”

Reporter: Are these persons known to police sir?

ASP Alejandro Cowo, CIB Belize City: “We have information that one of them is from Belize City.”

ASP Cowo says they police suspect that the men were headed to Belize City from the Guatemalan border. So far their information suggests that one of the men is from Belize City. According to ASP Cowo, the department has hiked patrols along the highways in efforts to crack down on drug trafficking, which has resulted in success.

ASP Alejandro Cowo, CIB Belize City: The amount of drugs that is being confiscated is very large so Police is constantly patrolling our highways to stop this importation of drugs from Guatemala into Belize.”

Reporter: Okay because last Friday in San Antonio Village area we had about 30lbs that were caught so is it that; we know that for example or one spell we had a lot of drugs or a lot of Oaxaca as they call it originating from Mexico. Is there a popular strain of Marijuana now originating from The Arenal area? Is this something that is known to you all or is it just business as usual for traffickers?

ASP Alejandro Cowo, CIB Belize City: No well we have known that form the past that is one of the main points that the drugs are coming in and sometimes people buy from there because it is cheaper to buy form that location.”
