AG shares details on the 8th Summit of the Americas

Yesterday, the Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte shared with the media what transpired at the Eighth Summit of the Americas held recently in Peru. Attorney General Peyrefitte along with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington and Belize’s Ambassador to the United States of America and the Organization of American States, Daniel Gutierrez attended the summit. The Attorney General said that this year’s theme dealt with corruption.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General: “Essentially those summits are designed to have governments present their situations in terms of as it relates to the themes for that year. This year had to deal with corruption in government and so all the countries who were present gave their presentations as to how they deal with corruption, what are the different tactics and measures and different styles of operating and dealing with it and we try to learn from each other, we try to have bilateral discussions in the margins of the meeting so that we can learn different tools of the trade from each other; this is how you battle this problem, or this is how you battle that problem. The thing with Belize is whenever we go there or whenever we go to these conferences we always hear people celebrating ‘well they’re about to set up an integrity commission.’ and they are about to do something groundbreaking what is that? An ombudsman, a contractor general. What are you doing Belize? Well we’ve had those in place for years now so in terms of laws we have excellent  laws on the books and we continue to everyday analyze those laws so we can improve on them.”
