Aragon says public must be informed on Belize Guatemala Issue

Earlier this year, Guatemala held a referendum where its citizens voted in favor of taking their country’s unfounded territorial claim on Belize to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Belize has yet to hold a referendum to decide on the matter and it is a topic which has the country divided. Today, Elodio Aragon Jr, the Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, told the media that the matter is of national importance and that everyone should be well informed about it.

Elodoio Aragon: Jr: Minister of State, Minister of National Security: I think every Belizean must educate themselves.  Must become informed so that they are able to make an educated decision when the time comes. I know we are going to referendum sometime I think the 10th of April next year and so I ask every Belizean to be educated on this matter. It is not something to be looked at politically; I personally do not look at it politically. This is greater than any political party. This is about the nation of Belize and its people and I believe that we have to educate ourselves. I personally will tell you right now I believe personally that we should go to the ICJ but again that is my personal opinion. I believe that every citizen of this country  has to make up their mind if they are for it or not for it. The government is the employee of the people of Belize and whatever the people of Belize will say at the end of the day in terms of the referendum that will be done.

The referendum will take place in April, 2019.
