On Friday basketball fans flocked to the Civic to witness the National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) basketball finals between SMART Belize Hurricanes and Digicell Belize City Defenders. One of those fans was 20 year old Tarique Garbutt. Unfortunately for Garbutt, he got into an altercation with someone who stabbed him. Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino gave more details.
Insp. Wilfred Ferrufino, CIB, Belize City: “Tyreke Garbutt a 20 year old reported that whilst at Civic he got in an altercation with an individual and that individual is unknown to him and the individual inflicted two stab wounds to him one to his upper right arm and one to the left side of his chest. He is listed in a stable condition and he is scheduled to undertake surgery. I do believe that whenever these, especially in the finals I know that whoever is in charge of the games do know that tensions may be high and they will ask for police services there but I can’t confirm how many police officers are working there but I’m quite sure that police officers were working at that final game.”
Police are seeking one suspect.
