There were three murders in the country over the last 24 hours. The incidents occurred on Ambergris Caye, Stann Creek and Belize City. A BDF volunteer, a family man, 30 year old Hamed Guzman was killed near his home on the southside of Belize City. Love News spoke to his grieving mother who has lost another son to the cold city streets.
Jose Sanchez – Reporter: “Hamed Guzman lived on Lopez Street with his family. He was gunned down around the corner of his home at 8:50 PM on Wednesday night.”
ACP Joseph Myvett: “Police were called to Lopez Street in the St. Martin’s De Porres area were upon arrival they observed the lifeless body of a male person who was later identified as Hamed Guzman 30 years of a Lopez Street address. Initial investigation revealed that shortly before that time Guzman along with another male person left his home and he was approached by a male person who fired several shots at him, some of which caught him causing the fatal injuries. So far we do not have anyone in custody and the police investigation into this matter is ongoing.”
Jose Sanchez – Reporter: “Guzman’s mother Ruth Castillo says that he was borrowing a bicycle to come and visit her.”
Ruth Guzman – Mother of deceased: “He was coming to my house, he was going to borrow a bike from his sister to buy gas. He was a very hard working person, he worked hard for his family. I would say he is a nice person, always running jokes and that kind of thing. I don’t know him as a disrespectful son or something like that. He is a family man, he has children, one girl, and two boys.
Jose Sanchez – Reporter: “Is that the sort of person that would have enemies or anything of that sort?”
Ruth Guzman – Mother of deceased: “He doesn’t have enemies, he has a lot of friends, a lot so that was so surprising to everybody you know.”
Jose Sanchez – Reporter: “The pain is more than extreme for his mother. Two years ago she lost another son, her second youngest 17-year-old Everal Augustin in this family photo with Hamed was also killed by gun violence in 2017.”
Ruth Guzman – Mother of deceased: “What I want to tell the police is to work harder, do their job better and when they start with an investigation to finish it right because with my first son the police came to my house one time and then they did not come back again, Everal Augustin Jr.”
Jose Sanchez – Reporter: “What year was he killed?”
Ruth Guzman – Mother of deceased: “He was gunned down on Olvera St. behind Tow Tow.”
Jose Sanchez – Reporter: “So both sons died somewhere not too far away from home?
Ruth Guzman – Mother of deceased: “Not too far away, yes.”
Jose Sanchez – Reporter: “Do you honestly think that the police would be able to have an arrest and a conviction? Do you have confidence in the system?”
Ruth Guzman – Mother of deceased: “No, I don’t, I don’t have confidence in the system, I think they should work harder and do their job better.”
Jose Sanchez: “Hamed Guzman was a model BDF Volunteer who lived with his common-law wife and her two children: a four-year-old and a five-month-old baby.
Ruth Guzman – Mother of deceased: “Well, what I have to say to other mothers, I used to see it on the news and I used to think it wouldn’t touch home and now it touches home so now I feel that pain as a mother, I feel that pain.”
It is unclear if Guzman was the target of the gunman as he was walking with a friend when he left his home.
