The Guatemala Red Cross is currently on the ground offering medical and psychosocial support to survivors. The Belize Red Cross has launched a monetary appeal to assist those affected by the volcano eruption.  Love News spoke with Fred Hunter Jr., the Focal Point for Disaster at the Belize Red Cross about the initiative.

Fred Hunter Jr. – Focal Point for Disaster, Belize Red Cross: “In Guatemala they suffered a huge disaster and the Belize Red Cross on behalf of the International Federation of Red Cross Societies is accepting cash donations for the disaster victims in Guatemala and anyone that can help, it hasn’t been our turn but we’ve always received external assistance, the Guatemalans have helped us, the Guatemalan red cross has helped us in the past when we’ve had floods and they’ve also been very instrumental in training our volunteers how to manage disaster scenarios, how to respond in the areas of health and hygiene as well as damage assessment and recovery and as have the Mexicans and Salvadorans- they’ve come to Belize and have gone out of the way to train not just us members from the City Council, NEMO, from the government wherever we can assist especially in training and preparing and sharing experiences that they have from the past to apply to any situation that may come up here. They’ve never held back so here I’m appealing to the public to give them a hand.”

Cash donation may be dropped off at the National Society’s Headquarters on Gabourel Lane in Belize City or deposited in account number 1082665 at the Heritage Bank Limited. The Belize Red Cross can be reached at telephone number 207-3319 for further information. Hunter said that the Belize Red Cross is on standby in case their assistance is needed in Guatemala.
