The Baymen won the Battle of St. George’s Caye on September 10, 1798. The heroic efforts of the Baymen continues to be highlighted with each passing year. Yesterday marked the 221st anniversary of the Battle of St. George’s Caye with ceremonies held countrywide. In Belize City, the ceremony was held at the Memorial Park with the usual pump and circumstance. There was the inspection of the Guard of Honour, the Installation of the Queen of the Bay, cultural presentations, and speeches by the Mayor of Belize City, Bernard Wagner and the Chairman of the National Celebrations Commission, Patrick Faber.
Many gathered along the principal streets in Belize City to witness the citizens parade. Meanwhile, in the west, residents of the capital city, Belmopan gathered at the steps of the National Assembly, where the ceremony took place. Cayo Correspondent, Fem Cruz has the details.
For the 10th Day celebrations in the south, the ceremony was held at the Punta Gorda Central Park. Toledo Correspondent Paul Mahung was there and filed this report.
The September celebrations are taking place under the theme “From Maya Grandeur to Modern Glory, Together let’s shape the Belizean Story”.
