Belize/Guatemala Joint Commission to Be Reactivated

Last week Friday, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington, met with Guatemala’s Foreign Affairs Minister, along with a Special Representative of the Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General at the OAS office at the Adjacency Zone. According to a government press release, the meeting was to discuss the status of the bilateral agenda and reactivate the Belize – Guatemala Joint Commission as established in 2005.  Both Foreign Affairs Ministers agreed that the work of the Joint Commission is important in promoting efforts at building confidence and enhancing relations between the two countries. The importance of meaningful programs that can directly promote development and protection of the environment in adjacent communities across the two countries were given special focus by the Ministers. The OAS was also recognized for playing a vital role in supporting the Joint Commission. Minister Elrington was accompanied by his CEO Lawrence Sylvester, Ambassador Alexis Rosado, Belize’s Commissioner on the Belize – Guatemala Joint Commission, Stuart Leslie; Director of International Affairs Said Guerra and Alfonso Gahona, Director of International Affairs and Luis Verde, Service Officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
